Luxembourg Gardens Paris

Jardin du Luxembourg — the Fontaine Médicis — most famous French garden in Paris for portraits

The Jardin du Luxembourg is the most beautiful garden in Paris for portrait photography, and it's not close. The Fontaine Médicis — built in 1630, Italian Renaissance stonework, a 50-metre reflecting pool flanked by towering plane trees — creates a photograph that looks like a film still before you've even composed the shot. This is the famous French garden in Paris that every American visitor has seen in magazines and never known the name of.

The Luxembourg Gardens 75006 Paris sit in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, 5 minutes from the major 6th-arrondissement hotels. The Luxembourg Palace overlooks the Grand Bassin — the iconic circular fountain with toy sailboats — perfect for wide couple portraits and Save the Date images.

Arrondissement: 6th
Metro: Odéon (line 4/10) · 7 min walk
Best time: 6:30–9 AM weekday · Golden hour
Opens: 7:30 AM (summer) · 8 AM (winter)
Entry: Free · No permit needed
Flora: Seasonal flowerbeds (geraniums, dahlias, petunias) · Classic and exotic trees (plane, linden, paulownia, ginkgo)
Highlights: Medici Fountain · Orchard with 379 apple and 247 pear varieties · Orchid greenhouse

Spot 1 — Fontaine Médicis (the iconic shot)

Stand at the far end of the reflecting pool, facing the fountain. The architectural frame and water reflection create a natural "stage". I position 20 metres back with a telephoto — invisible. Best light: 7–8 AM clear morning.

Spot 2 — Grand Bassin terrace (couple + palace)

The circular fountain with Luxembourg Palace behind you. Ideal for wide portraits and Save the Date cards. The symmetry of the palace photographs beautifully.

Spot 3 — Tree-lined allées (candid walking shots)

Golden hour light through the plane trees casts dappled shadows on gravel — the most genuinely Parisian backdrop in the city. I shoot these candid, from the side.

Crowd reality: Summer afternoons (June–August, 12–7 PM) the Luxembourg fills. Arrive before 9 AM or after 7 PM. September–May weekday mornings are almost entirely crowd-free.

Tuileries Garden Paris — Iconic Garden Near the Louvre

Jardin des Tuileries in Paris — between the Louvre Gardens and Place de la Concorde

The Tuileries Garden Paris France is the most internationally famous garden in Paris — stretching from the Louvre to Place de la Concorde, it has been a backdrop for fashion shoots and royal promenades since 1564. The Carrousel Garden (between the Louvre pyramid and the main garden) offers the most dramatic architectural shot in the city: the glass pyramid, the Louvre's neoclassical wings, and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel all in one frame.

The Louvre gardens Paris section near the west pond (Bassin Rond Ouest) is where I take the most striking sunset portraits — the Musée de l'Orangerie behind you, the Grand Bassin reflecting the fading sky. A photograph that says "Paris" more clearly than any Eiffel Tower shot.

Arrondissement: 1st
Metro: Tuileries (line 1) · 2 min walk
Best time: Golden hour (sunset) · Early morning
Opens: 7:30 AM (summer) · 7 AM (winter)
Entry: Free · No permit needed
Facilities: Toilets near the central basin · Green chairs available
Nearby: Louvre Museum 3–5 min walk · Cafés and kiosks inside the garden
Flora: Seasonal flowerbeds · Plane trees, lindens and chestnuts · Groves redesigned with 136 plant varieties
Highlights: Terraces, staircases and ponds · Grande Allée perspective · Classical and modern sculptures

Spot 1 — Carrousel Garden (Louvre backdrop)

The garden east of the Louvre pyramid. The Arc du Carrousel frames you against the glass pyramid. Best at golden hour with a 35mm lens at f/2.8.

Spot 2 — West Pond near L'Orangerie (sunset portraits)

The most beautiful sunset spot in Paris you've never heard of. The Musée de l'Orangerie reflects in the round pond with the plane trees turning gold behind you. Peak light: 30 minutes before sunset.

Spot 3 — The Grand Allée (perspective shots)

The central allée with statues on either side — 300 metres of perspective. Best with a telephoto to compress the depth.

Crowd reality: Heavy midday in summer. Early morning (7–9 AM) or sunset (after 7 PM) are the only practical options for clean backgrounds.

Palais Royal Garden Paris — Best Hidden Garden in Paris

Jardin du Palais-Royal — the secret royal palace garden near the Louvre Paris

The Palais Royal Garden Paris is my favourite garden in Paris for photoshoots. Most visitors walk past the entrance without realising what's inside: a hidden garden completely enclosed by neoclassical arcades, symmetrical lime tree allées, two fountains, and the famous Buren columns — black and white striped columns used in dozens of fashion campaigns and films. Unlike the Tuileries, this royal palace garden Paris has almost no tourist overflow at any hour. The arcades also provide full rain cover — the only garden in central Paris where rain doesn't affect the session.

Arrondissement: 1st
Metro: Palais-Royal (line 1/7) · 2 min walk
Best time: Weekday morning 9–11 AM · All year
Opens: 7 AM (varies by season)
Entry: Free · Full rain cover under arcades

Spot 1 — Buren Columns (contemporary fashion)

The striped columns in the inner courtyard. A graphic, contemporary backdrop unlike anything else in Paris. Used in Vogue editorials and cinema.

Spot 2 — Central fountain (classic elegant)

The two symmetrical fountains in the central garden with arcades as backdrop. The shot most people associate with "sophisticated Paris".

Spot 3 — Covered arcade (rainy day session)

18th-century arcade gallery, completely rain-protected. Stone arches and warm light — often more atmospheric than the open garden.

Parc Monceau — Paris's Most Elegant Hidden Park

Parc Monceau is where Paris hides from tourists. Located in the 8th arrondissement — the most expensive residential district in France — this is one of the best parks and gardens in Paris for photography with zero tourist crowds. The Rotonde de Chartres (neoclassical columned rotunda) provides Roman-temple grandeur year-round. The Egyptian pyramid folly near the north entrance is unique to this park and creates extraordinary creative portraits.

Arrondissement: 8th
Metro: Monceau (line 2) · 3 min walk
Best time: 8–10 AM any day · Year-round
Opens: 7 AM year-round
Entry: Free · No permit needed

Spot 1 — Rotonde de Chartres colonnade

Stand in front of the circular colonnade, I shoot through the columns for depth. The Roman architecture frames you like an oil painting with pond reflection.

Spot 2 — Arched bridge over the pond

Intimate portraits with water bokeh. Most photos from here look like a private English-countryside estate.

Spot 3 — Egyptian pyramid folly

Unusual and striking — creative couple portraits you simply cannot replicate anywhere else in Paris.

Trocadéro Gardens Paris — Eiffel Tower Backdrop

The Trocadéro Gardens Paris France offer the single most iconic photograph in Paris: the Eiffel Tower framed by the Palais de Chaillot wings, fountains in the foreground. It's on every postcard. It's also surrounded by thousands of tourists by 10 AM. The solution: arrive at sunrise. At 6:30–7:30 AM on a weekday, the Trocadéro is empty, the light is golden and directional. By 8:30 AM the tour groups arrive. I only accept Trocadéro sessions at sunrise, and the results justify every early alarm.

Arrondissement: 16th
Metro: Trocadéro (lines 6, 9) · 3 min walk
Best time: Sunrise ONLY — 6:30–8 AM
Opens: 24h (outdoor public space)

Honest advice: Any time other than sunrise and you'll be surrounded by selfie sticks and tour buses. I'll send you a 5:45 AM wake-up WhatsApp — it's worth it.

Bagatelle Gardens Paris — Waterfalls, Roses & Hidden Bridges

The Bagatelle Gardens Paris are one of the most romantic and peaceful gardens in the city — a hidden world of waterfalls, stone bridges, peacocks, and winding paths. Created in 1775 in just 64 days after a royal bet, Bagatelle feels like a countryside escape inside Paris. Its century-old rose garden (10,000 roses, 1,200 varieties) is one of the most beautiful in France.

For photoshoots, Bagatelle offers a rare mix of nature and architecture: cascades framed by rocks, elegant flowerbeds, and small bridges perfect for couple portraits. It’s quieter than the central Paris gardens, making it ideal for romantic sessions, families, and anyone wanting a cinematic, natural backdrop.

Arrondissement: 16th
Metro: Pont de Neuilly (line 1) + bus 43/93
Best time: Morning light · May–July for roses
Opens: 9:30 AM (varies by season)
Entry: Free · Rose garden €3 in summer
Good to know: Bagatelle is large and peaceful — perfect for shy couples or anyone wanting a quiet, nature-filled session away from the crowds of central Paris.

Outfit guide for Paris garden sessions

What to wear in a Paris garden

Solid colours photograph better than patterns. Avoid neon. Coordinate in the same palette (navy + cream, white + grey, olive + tan).

For Luxembourg at sunrise: Bring a light layer — it can be cool before 9 AM. A linen jacket photographs movement beautifully.

For Tuileries / Palais Royal: Dress slightly smarter than you normally would. The neoclassical architecture elevates everything.

Send me a photo of both outfits the morning of the session via WhatsApp. I'll confirm the combination works against your chosen garden background.

No need to over-prepare. The gardens do the work. The most natural photos come from couples who stopped trying to pose.

Frequently asked questions

Paris Gardens & Photo Shoots — FAQ

The best garden in Paris for a photo shoot depends on the mood. For timeless romance: Jardin du Luxembourg (Fontaine Médicis — Italian Renaissance architecture, water reflections — the most beautiful garden in Paris). For grand French elegance near the Louvre: Tuileries Garden. For a hidden, intimate feel 5 min from the Louvre: Palais Royal garden. For Eiffel Tower views: Trocadéro Gardens (sunrise only). For rain-safe & unique: Serres d'Auteuil greenhouse.
The most famous gardens in Paris are the Jardin des Tuileries (the most internationally visited — between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde), the Jardin du Luxembourg (6th arr., most beloved by Parisians, famous for the Fontaine Médicis) and the Trocadéro Gardens (famous Eiffel Tower backdrop). For photo shoots, Luxembourg Garden ranks first for photographic quality and intimacy.
Yes — all major Paris gardens are free: Luxembourg, Tuileries, Palais-Royal, Parc Monceau, Trocadéro, Champ de Mars, Buttes-Chaumont, Serres d'Auteuil. No ticket or reservation needed. Personal photo shoots are permit-free in all public gardens. Bagatelle (€6.50) and Versailles gardens (free) are the only exceptions with nominal entry fees.
The two best gardens near the Louvre are the Jardin des Tuileries (directly adjacent — the most famous garden in Paris near the Louvre) and the Jardin du Palais-Royal (5 minutes on foot from the pyramid — quieter, more intimate, fully covered under arcades if it rains). For photoshoots, Palais-Royal is often the better choice: fewer tourists, more interesting architecture.
Early morning (7–9 AM) offers the softest light and nearly empty gardens. Golden Hour (30 min before sunset) is second best for warm, flattering light. Avoid summer midday (12–2 PM) when parks fill with tourists and locals. Sunrise sessions at Trocadéro: +€25 supplement.
The best hidden gardens in Paris: Jardin du Palais-Royal (most tourists walk past without entering — beautiful neoclassical arcades and Buren columns), Parc Monceau (local secret of the 8th arrondissement — Roman columns and Egyptian pyramid), Square du Vert-Galant (triangular garden at the tip of Île de la Cité under Pont Neuf), Serres d'Auteuil (Art Nouveau botanical greenhouse). All free.
Yes. Monet's garden in Giverny is 80 km from Paris, about 1h30 by car or train + taxi. Open April to November. The famous water lily pond is the most photographed garden in France. I offer a full-day photoshoot package including Giverny from €600 for 4 hours. The Versailles Gardens Paris (40 min by RER C) is another spectacular day-trip option — the gardens are free to enter.
Yes. The best tulip garden in Paris is at Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne — spectacular displays in April. The Luxembourg Gardens and Tuileries Garden also have impressive seasonal tulip plantings (March–April). For a full tulip garden photo shoot, I recommend Bagatelle in late April with the château garden as backdrop.
Light rain: we proceed — wet paths and reflections are often more cinematic than clear skies. Heavy rain: the backup plan is always confirmed that morning via WhatsApp. Options: Serres d'Auteuil (glass greenhouse, fully covered), Palais Royal arcades (elegant covered walkway) or the Louvre passage Richelieu. Sessions are never cancelled for weather.
